Christmas lights are already going up across Havering, with businesses and residents starting to get into the festive spirit.
However, a “ginormous” light-up reindeer on the corner of South Street and Arcade Place – installed by Romford Business Improvement District (BID) – has already stolen the limelight.
Described by Romford BID itself as a “showstopper” and “stunning”, it seems Recorder readers agree it is just what the town needs to kick-start the festive season.
Faye Levey called it “absolutely brilliant”, while other readers agreed, commenting on Facebook to say they “love it”.
Lisa Judd said: “I think he’s great!
“Saw him last week and it gave me a big smile.”
Many readers praised Romford BID, adding that if it wasn’t for them the town centre would look “really depressing”.

Tinker Bex said: “Hats off to Romford Business Improvement District they have taken Christmas to another level, #romfordreindeer deserves to be trending!
“BID have gone above and beyond with their contribution to town centre lights – high praise and hope they get the recognition!”
After Havering Council confirmed there would be no Christmas lights switch-on in Market Place this year, and no Christmas trees in the borough’s town centres, businesses and organisations like Romford BID stepped up to offer a range of events and decorations.
Of all the Romford town centre decorations – which include lights in the major shopping centres and a tree outside the Golden Lion – the giant reindeer is particularly popular with little ones.
Emma Louise said: “My five year old loves it.
“She’s adamant she wants to see his face and wants to look out the surrounding windows to see his face.”
Recorder readers have also suggested names for the beloved light-up creature, such as “McJingles” and “Rommy the Romford Reindeer”.
